To us the great attraction of The Okavango Delta is the water. The motor boat trips are great fun. You wind around narrow channels with hairpin bends and across large lagoons as smooth as glass. Some drivers go quite fast. Although, admittedly, this is exciting it should be discouraged. The wash damages the banks and disturbs the wildlife particularly the birds. You will observe much more when travelling sedately anyway.
Guides will take the opportunity on the boats to explain to you all about the formation of the Okavango Delta, the way the water flows and how islands and channels are formed. This is a great experience for ornithologists. There are many water birds. Hippopotami and crocodiles are around and if you are lucky you may see an elephant crossing through the water.
Antelopes come down to the water to drink and can be seen on flood plains to the side. Due to the height of the papyrus and reeds not very much can be observed on land. An exception to this however is at Kwara where they have a double decker boat.
